I'm looking at a home thats for sale. its a really good price but the only draw back is that it has apartment's and condos around it.. I'd want to build a deck, and I'm thinking about having some of it with a tall privacy fence so people on the upperlevels of the apartment can look down on me..

How tall of a fence does anybody guess I could build? from the ground, or from a deck that is say 5'-8' feet off the ground?

If you make it too tall, you would hinder sunlight entering your home. Bear this in consideration.

on one side, there is a 3 story apartment building, probably no more than 25 feet away from the house. the fence wouldn't be taller than the apartment building, just tall enough to keep the home's windows out of line of sight of the 3rd story windows.. On the other side, the apartments are probably 150 feet away, and that would be the side with a deck.. It wouldn't need such high fencing and would still have plenty of room for sunlight..

could i build a 12 foot tall fence?

Check with your city. In some places, fences over seven feet are not allowed at all in residential zones.

EDIT: Doh, too slow.

Dunno. While one could normally say there is a loophole, there are so many codes out there that one almost certainly covers that. I know a guy that built a seven foot fence and the city forced him to cut off the top foot. Sadly, they do enforce this crap (and I say sadly because a 7-8 foot fence is hard to jump over whereas a 6 foot fence is easy).

You'll have to get your privacy from something besides a 12 ft. fence. Not code and uber expensive.

Make a screen out of wood lattice for one side of the deck. You can even put planters along it and have a vining plant (rose, clematis, ivy, etc.) grow through it.

ie, build the fence, but put something on top of it to make it "taller"?

This comes from a Dwarf?

I was referring to normal sized people. Us dwarves just get pissed off and go through the fence.

I mean mount a screen/trellis on one side of the deck, like a fence mounted to the deck.

Here is something store-bought

Google: planter with trellis

generally code is 6 feet maybe an awning over the deck might work better for privacy
