how succesful are computer building companies that are just starting?

just wondering because i am thinking of starting my own and was wondering how hard it is to get customers now with all of the other big companies out there?

i would provide technical support but not 24/7 and no onsite since to small website is being built now

I would imagine not very. With companies like Dell, Gateway and Compaq I think you'll have a very hard time keeping up with them.

I came to the conclusion a while back that the hardware end of it is a bust. Even doing repairs can suck because once you touch somebody's PC, you're the first person they call for every little glitch. Screw that!

If you can stand it, try teaching instead. Charge people to tutor them on their own PCs or have them come to you. No hardware or software headaches. No emergency phone calls when a deadline is looming and the PC you just worked on is buggy again. I haven't taken my own advice on that, but I may someday. I'm not that people oriented, but for the right price I can change! ;)

i think ornery summed it up very nicely.

they install a new game and they install direct x 6.0 with it. it's your fault.

their kid spills coke on the keyboard. it's your fault.

they cant figure out how to merge a cell in excell. they call you to help them.

stay away!!
