How sturdy are Dells, Sony Vaios, Toshiba's, etc?

Sure they look hot, but can they hold up to the test?

I know most IBMs are rated pretty highly... but what about the others? The Vaios (F series) seemed kinda flimsy, but maybe they're better than I think?

I tend to be a little rough, and I don't want to end up with something I'll break by breathing on it the wrong way!

Thanks,
Andrew

Dells are pretty reliable, good quality for the most part. One of my freinds has an old Dell Dimension and it holds up fairly well.

Sonys are good. the thin ones won't fall apart. the dell's get HOT and are way too heavy. I had one on my lap for 30mins and it was burning me. unless you plan on thossing your laptop around, any of them should be fine.

I don't have a notebook but I've had a Dell Dimension Desktop (rig #2 in profile) which has been a "GEM". I haven't had to bother tech support and no components have failed (knock on wood). I've repartioned and reformatted the IBM 14.4 GXP hard drive a couple of different times but that was MY decision based on wanting multiple partitions for multiple OS's when I was studying Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 networking.

I can't say enough good things about DELL products.... but don't ask me about GATEWAY's, THAT's ANOTHER story......

Well I must say since I work for Dell and my job deals directly with returns, refurbs, rma, etc. that if you are looking for a desktop than Dell has some very struby machines. However, if you are looking for notebook than you should know a few things. Many magazines and tech sites that do stress test on notebooks seem to favor Dell as being fairly strong. But I would say that most of the notebooks we receive every day are usually being returned because of something being broken or somethiong that does not properly work (ie: the latch for the display, batteries that fall out when you pitck them up, drives that fall out,etc.). I would never recommend a notevbook to anyone period for personaly reasons but if you need one than maybe a Dell notebook may not be that best choice.

Sony makes great laptops (best in the business in my opinion) however their support is crap. You only get 90 days of software tech support, the hardware support is only for one year. The batteries are only gauranteed for 30 days! If anything goes wrong with the laptop after one year your going to pay at least half of what you paid for the unit in repair costs. On top of all that if you do have to get it repaired you have to thier notebook repair center which is in California.
