how stupid/smart is the average dog?

would it, say, accidently jump out a 4th floor window because it saw a cat below or something?

I'm pretty clueless but my parents' asked me to dogsit for them next week and I'm trying to dog-proof my apartment beforehand (they've got a pretty energetic golden retreiver puppy)

They won't normally jump out windows but you can count on stuff, lots of stuff, being chewed up.

Adult dogs are pretty smart, much smarter than you think if you've never had a dog. A dog would just do what you say and not cause you any problems. Who knows what a puppy will do though... are you talking about leaving low windows open? Would you leave it open if you had a 2 year old kid there?

Depends on the breed and to a greater degree that dog in particular. Some are just more impulsive(AKA dumb) than others. Beagles come to mind first, with a lab being a close second.

Dogs can jump thru windows. Of frind of mine had his retriever mix ump through a window from the 2nd story. Luckily the dog survived.

If it's a puppy, just baby proof your home. Don't leave things out that you don't want him to get into. Give him plenty of exercise to keep him from getting bored.
