Throttling, double-dipping, Title II shenanigans?

...How exactly can Verizon claim Title II? Easy: Verizon also has a landline telephone business. Telephone carriers are classified and regulated under Title II of the communications Act. This regulation controls costs, and allows telephone carriers to use backbones of other utilities, to ease the build-out of networks by piggybacking on existing infrastructure. Since land-line businesses are dying, Verizon and others keep this part of its business around as a very powerful tool.

So, Verizon jumps back and forth on Title II classification, depending on whether or not it perceives an advantage, and even outright classifies itself under Title II. Yet today it is publicly trashing Title II as an old regulation from the 1930's.

The fact that Verizon is releasing this kind of PR stunt designed to tell you, the public, that the FCC is using an outdated regulation not suitable for the modern technology era, is complete horse shit. The PR machine at Verizon is essentially spitting in your face thinking you won't even notice because it knows the majority of the public is too ignorant of what actually goes on behind the scenes and that most people don't really have the time to dig through reports and papers.

Yes, but the bottom line is that the Telco Acts of 1934 and 1996 are outdated and unsuited for this day and age.

As a matter of fact, the FCC has done an absolute crap job at ensuring that the tenants of 1996 were even followed by the telcos. The billions in taxes that were given to the ILECs to build infrastructure weren't used to build infrastructure and the FCC did nothing to make sure that happened. The USF is so poorly managed that it's a complete joke.

Why? The revolving door, that's why.

If the FCC did its job, we wouldn't be discussing this.

That said, if you think that "net neutrality" is anything other than yet another power grab by the government, you're a naive bumpkin. The FCC has shown again and again that it has no interest in protecting consumers. Just look at the 3.65ghz plan and the recent 700mhz sale and plan. Also the lack of 10ghz public spectrum (every other nation on Earth has this.)

Also, that article is outdated. The rules that allow carriers access to other carriers' infrastructure at fixed prices are ending. As an example, ILECs in California is no longer required to wholesale DSL and no longer is required to provide access to its dark fiber between end offices. In fact, this has been the case for at least a year. I don't know about other states, since my ISP and telephone company was based in California, but I imagine that other states' PUCs operate similarly.

The FCC is a joke. It is the embodiment of institutionalized lobbyism and crony capitalism. Do not look to it to protect the consumer or smaller telcos/ISPs. State PUCs are even worse.
