Sorry for leading you astray :) But I just had to make this attract some more people, hopefully. And since you're already here, you can take the "real" test.

A friend of mine has translated Shakespeare's Twelfth Night into modern British and American slang. For the evaluation process she's created a questionnaire and needs some answers so she has some substance to work with.

She'd greatly appreciate it if you could take some of your time to fill this out:

thanks in advance :)

.... Not very good slang (IE it is too much of a fake movie like accent for the british version and too much of.. well, I don't know what sort of slang it was shooting for in the american accent). I'm guessing your friend doesn't speak english as a first language.

eh, I would be impressed (assuming the questions are actually representative) if she kept the iambic pentameter with the slang.

tell her to watch Deadwood.

it is a German web sight...:hmm:

and yeah, slang in dialogue is not achieved through misspelling, but through word choice. Simply misspelling words to phonetically convey slang is a sign of poor writing.

I got the same impression. Fake "Snatch"-esque British slang...

The line I laughed at the most was this one

"Ace! I think we got a plan!"

Come on, WHO uses "ace" as an exclamation? The closest I can think of is someone from the 40's or 50's saying "You're all aces kid."

Well.. sort of. She speaks English at home. But since we live in Switzerland, she doesn't really get to use it in every day speech.

frankly, I didn't understand the questions and the slang was like a bad mix of different regions and time periods.

I just did it and it came back with a score of 350. Is this good or should I get a brain transplant?

Sorry, translating the bard into anyone's slang makes my head hurt and my urge to slap the author go through the roof.

Ouch...."Shakespeare gets sodomized"..

:hmm: I'd watch that.....

Ok, my thoughts, which I put on the forms I submitted: The British slang sounded over the top, there was too much of it. The American slang was a bit dated. It sounds like one of those anti-drug commercials depicting teens, but obviously written by someone who's 45 years old and was unpopular when they were a kid. It's not a bad start though; I could at least understand what she was getting at in each passage

for those that have already filled out the questionnaire, thank you very much :)
And to those that haven't already, please give it a look, it'll only take a few minutes. Thanks :)
