I just helped my 8 y/o niece to sign up for a facebook account. She was begging me to help her since many of her friends already have it.

After that, I realized she probably should not have it.

i know you meant well but i wouldn't take too kindly to my brother creating a facebook account for either of my girls if they were 8 years old and he didn't ask or inform us.

I'd have made her do it herself. An email account isn't hard to come by if you look. Give pointers, but don't do the work for her. My daughter's computer is currently down, and I told her she has to fix it herself. I'm tired of doing the maintenance, and I won't do it anymore. When she wants a computer bad enough, she'll take the time to figure the problem out.
 
It ranks slightly under killing your parents with a sledgehammer, then going back to playing video games.

When we allowed our son, about 14 at the time to get a Facebook account, his grades tanked. I hope the same doesn't happen to your niece, the parents find out and then are pissed at you for not thinking about the effects of these stupid-ass social sites. And yes, we ended up blocking the site and his grades got better.
 
That's pretty fail... if it was your brother/sister that you helped setup an account for it would be a bit different....
