How should you launch an M3 with an SMG transmission?

A few weeks ago I drove an 04 M3 with the 6 speed tranny at the BMW dealership.

Yesterday, I went to a dealership that deals in low mileage high end cars. One of the cars there was an 04 M3 with the SMG tranny. I took it for a drive with the salesman and started wondering how you launch it since I'm used to bringing the RPM's up a little and then letting the clutch out slowly.

Do I just put it in neutral and then shift into first or something using the paddle?

Possibly, but I didn't want to pull over during a test drive to read the manual :p

Select performance mode program 6 on the centre console-mounted switch. Move the gearstick forward and hold it there. plant your foot on the gas pedal, press it to the floor and hold it there. The rpms will hover around to 3,500rpm. Release the stick to launch!

I'll admit I didn't like either of the M3's :(

Just too many electronics all over the place and not enough power. I basically want something very simple and powerful. They had a few Vipers there too, but I imagine upkeep is high on those things, not really something for a daily driver.

As funny as it may sound, after driving cars like the S4, M3, S60R, Roush Mustang GT, etc. I like the S2000 the most, although it definitely needs more torque.

well, if you just want to have fun, the S2000 is a good choice. but keep in mind you're looking for a daily driver. the S2000 may or may not meet those needs for you, since it only has two seats and a small trunk.

Thanks, I'll give that a try next time I drove one.

I have an Accord that I'll be keeping, which is why I'm pretty much open to any car in terms of practicality. Although the STi looks good too. If I'm out with a friend and want to pick up another friend or two on the way, I can do it with the STi but not the S2000.

normally you just hit the gas, the computer will drop the clutch automatically. very touchy throttle control though, you have to hit it right or you'll buck.

if you want to take off in a race, M3 with SMG has a feature called launch control.

turn traction control off, select S6 mode. Move the shift lever to the up position (Downshift) and hit the gas all the way. you should rev up to around 1800rpms, and when the light turns green, release the lever. You'll be off like a rocket. try it, it's awesome.

Ah, they're usually just standing around with their thumbs up their asses or a blank stare on their faces anyway. Who really cares if you waste a car salesman's time anyway? I sure don't.

STi is the sh!t! Performance equal to the M3 but for half the price.

man, I wish I have the guts and skills to walk in a dealership and test drive the car I want without being hassle by those salesmen.

anyway, is that Saab 9-2x deal still going on? you can get the "saab" WRX with a 3500 discount or something like that, check out the Hot Deal forum.
