Given the recent developments with NK sinking a SK ship. Lets say NK decides to show off, and show that it can strike a major U.S city. I assume the closes major city is Anchorage. How should the U.S react if NK launches a missle at Anchorage, AK. Not a nuclear missle, but a one with a conventional warhead. Lets say 5-10 people are killed or injured and a building is heavily damaged or destroyed. What should they U.S do in response.

Probably some sort of UN response. I dunno if we'd hastily try to jump into a war.

I think this should go to P&N

I'm willing to go out on a limb here but it doesn't sound good...

Possibly something involving Sarah Palin and a hockey stick?

No US city would be hit, we have detectors and anti-missiles all over the place.

That would be bad. They'd be longing for the days Kim was their leader :^D

An intentional strike on U.S. soil like that would be an act of war. We should first call the PRC up and tell them to stay the hell out of our way as we discipline their out of control step-child since they obviously failed to do so.

We should level all of NK's military bases and any factory producing war materials with air strikes and institute a full naval blockade. Get the U.N. to slap a full embargo on them.

But, I know some will come in here saying that the NK people should not suffer for the crimes of their leaders. There might come a point when we cannot allow them to hide behind their brainwashed human shields any longer.

DEW line was dismantled long ago due to obsolescence. Current tech lets NORAD know fairly quickly if something is inbound, be it a jet, missile, meteor, etc.

We don't however have anti-missiles everywhere. We don't even have such things in most places, or where they would make tactical sense, or even where we've been stung before. (i.e. Cuba / South FL is remarkably unprotected), relying on the combo of MacDill in Tampa, and a Navy base at Key West.

Was there any of this tech at Great Stirrup Cay?

I understood the Berry island install to be related more to the space program and for satellite comms than civil defense.

Well the US has a limited active ABM system called the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system that is based at Fort Greely Alaska and Vanderburg in CA. So a missile launched at Anchorage, AK would be well within the intercept envelope of this system. I am really not sure what the Obama administration would do especially if the missile was intercepted and destroyed. The problem is are you going to go to war over a conventional warhead strike on US soil? I am not even sure if SK wants to go to war considering the amount of artillery batteries within range of Seoul. Probably the US would move some Aegis ships closer to SK and push for more sanctions instead of a all out war. The price of a all out war in Korea that could potentially leave thousands of civilians dead. The US might launch some limited B-2 bomber strikes into NK to punish it however with all those artillery batteries within range of Seoul this is very dangerous.

You're wondering what would happen if NK committed an act of war against the United States? :p

It might not be an ICBM, but I remember NK developing a missile that could reach Alaska and Hawaii.

Yes they are the Taep'o-dong-2 however it is believed to be still in development at this time. It would require a missile with a range of at least 3,500 miles to reach from NK to Anchorage, AK.

Beware, the mighty UN resolution! We will pound you into submission with our marshmellow fists, and then tickle you into complacency!

We'd probably hit them pretty hard with some B-2s and then release a statement claiming that we retaliated for their attack and plan no further action unless they act first.

This way we send a message, but don't do it in such a way that it leads to all out war.
