should jeans be washed after every use? i know that whenever I wash jeans, they get hard and tough. I've heard that one should wear jeans continuously with little washing... but won't they stink after a while?

Underwear and socks should only be worn one day; half a day if you got all sweaty (at gym, working on car, etc)

Clothes that don't directly touch the body (like underwear) such as jeans, T-shirts, sweaters, etc; definitely wash if soiled (you spilled something on them, slid on grass playing baseball) But if you only wore them for a couple of hours (you took a shower, put on clothes went to a movie and came home) they are clean, and can be "aired out" and worn again.

At least that's what I do.

CAVEAT: Any clothing at all worn during the summertime is dirty the second you put it on. Wear and wash. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Haha alright. So jeans, presumably worn in the winter, dont need to be washed after each use. When to wash them?

Wash jeans each time? They would de-color at once. Heck, I only wash mine once in about a month or so.

But dont they smell?

Say I wear them to school every day... That's from 7:30am to about 2:30pm. There's no ACTIVE things happening, so I wont be sweating, but I still feel like they'd be "dirty". Would once a week work?

Are you serious? Wash after evry use. You are not wearing out your jeans, you are destroying them in the washer.

If you waer the same pair every day they will get smelly fast. Make sure you have several and alternate daily. Wash once a week.

Heck, I swear by God they don't smell, except for the laundry conditioner I used when washing them. No smell!!!

I usually wear khakis.

If I wear pants, shorts or a shirt and do not sweat or go someplace stinky like a bar while wearing them, they are good for another use before washing. Clothes will last twice as long if you wash them half as much.

Yes, if you sweat while wearing your jeans, by all means wash them. But if you simply wear them to dinner, there is no need to wash them before wearing them again.

I usually get two wears from all my jeans, pants, shorts and shirts. Sometimes three if the first and second wearing were brief enough. But never more than that because even if you do not sweat, you still deposit body oil into the fabric, and the clothes will get funky.

Yeah.. I think I'm gonna get two pairs of GOOD jeans, like Diesels or Structures or something. I'll alternate those with my regular Old Navy khakis, etc..

Men should rotate through two or three pairs of jeans all week. Wash on the weekend.

As for womens jeans, I perfer them on my floor.

I usually wear khakis.

So you are destroying your khakis in the washer too.
Once a week is plenty.

do you use fabric softener?

You don't have to use it every time (I do it every second or third wash). You can get it unscented if you don't like the smell.

Yep, the vast majority of wear to your clothes comes from washing them, not wearing them. Like I said before, your clothes will last twice as long if you wash them half as much.

Looks like it. I noticed jeans never look like new after you wash them, even once. This is the exact reason I now wear pants more, and have only a few pairs of jeans left. They don't last, and start looking crappy very fast. That's why I think buying them is a waste of some sort.

Laundry is generally a fairly damaging practice, especially with nicer clothes that aren't as readily replaceable, so it's a good idea to avoid frequent machine washing/drying. If you're really anal you could try washing by hand and airing them out to dry, but that obviously has to be a royal pain in the ass. Regular wearing won't get your jeans too dirty, unless you sweat a lot or stain them noticeably. I'd say once every few wearings should do.

No I dont use fabric softener. Does it help? Do jeans shrink in the dryer/washer?

They usually shrink up to 3% the first time. Basically jeans shrinks a bit and then stretches out after some wear but if you wash them every day you won't see any stretching.

Who wants to have jeans that look like new anyway? Maybe todays ugly jeans with fake dirt and fake wear patterns look bad after a few times. Hell they look like crap when they are new.
Good old Levi's look better and feel better the more they are worn.

you'll know when they're dirty. they'll either look dirty, smell dirty, or stand by 'emselves. wash them when any of those apply.
