How should I transport my HDTV?

I have a 46" LCD HDTV and am going to be moving to a new city 5 hours away. Can I lay my TV flat, or should it always be vertical? Will if hurt it if I move it flat?

If I have it vertical, it will have to go in a trailer in 15F degree weather. However, if I can put it flat, we can put it in my SUV. Which is preferable?

Also, if I can lay it flat, should I have the screen facing up or facing down?

I have the original box and padding and everything.

I'd opt for SUV, facing up, and take it easy on the bumps. Trailer may be a harsher ride.

Cold shouldn't hurt it at all. Just let it acclimate before firing it up. I don't think the back of UPS trucks are heated.

I think I might opt to have it in the SUV face up for the smoother ride.

Anybody else have an opinion? I just don't want to ruin my TV. That would certainly put me in a foul mood.

'nutha option is shipping it... let someone else assume the responsibility. Although if it arrived box intact that may be the limit of it. Is it still under warranty?

Lay it on a thick blanket, face up in the SUV. I carried mine for about 45 minutes in my SUV from the store in the box, but I made sure it was face up in the box before carrying it. Face down might have scratched it on the corners where the styrofoam was pressed against the screen.

I would maybe remove the base from it, unless you have it properly supported so the base is not causing a bending or warping of the tv from the tv lying on it improperly. Also, the base is not shipped attached to any large flat screen tv I know of, and shipping it upright with the base on it might cause internal TV damage to the base mount or the TV itself if you hit a lot of bumps in the road. It might crack something inside the case that way. I think maybe shipped either way you might want to remove the base from it, just to be safe with it. On my 46" LCD the base sticks out a lot on the front and back of the TV.

And it's good you have the original box, but my box was not a very good one, considering the price of the TV that was in it. I noticed when I threw it out today the styrofoam was cracked on all 4 corners of the box, and on the bottom it was almost cracked into pieces. The box, however, was undamaged as far as I could tell. After I noticed that, I inspected the TV for possible damage on the corners, but did not see anything, so I guess the styrofoam worked. I think I would opt for the thick blanket padding it approach over repacking in the box, but that's your call there.
