How should I read Tom Clancy books?

gorcorps

aka Brandon
So the talk here about which movie I should watch got me wanting to read all these Tom Clancy books concerning Jack Ryan. My question to you guys who've read them, or at least some, is should I read them in order that Clancy wrote them or the order that the story happens?

edit: here's a page on wiki that gives the orders both ways: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryanverse

I read them in the order he wrote them. The main prequels I remember are Without Remorse and Red Robin, and I didn't like Red Robin nearly as well as the other books. Without Remorse was great, though. I know he has written at least one more book since Red Robin, but I haven't bothered with it.

If I was going to start with Clancy all over again I'd do it in the order the story occurs rather than the order as written. I hate when authors run out of ideas for their characters and start doing entire flashback novels.

I liked all the Jack Ryan novels up until Red Rabbit. I mean, honestly, the guy is just a regular guy, he doesn't have to be a millionaire/Marine/historian/stock broker/politician/national security specialist/etc. Some people are multi talented but I don't know anyone that is that multitalented.

Start by reading "Without Remorse". Then keep reading it over and over until you fully appreciate how awesome it is. I've only read one or two other Tom Clancy books, but they weren't as good as WIthout Remorse. Hunt for Red October was pretty good though...

The books were pretty much written in the order of character development.
Red Storm Rising (second one written) was an interesting what/if scenario

Read them in the order written.

He's my favorite author. I'm hoping a new book is out soon because it's been quite a while.

I've only read Rainbow 6. Some of the action 'sequences' are a bit too action-movie, 'cartoonish' for my taste. Just read the ones you want.

Read it in order of storyline. Some of the books have nothing to do with Jack Ryan, but if you go in order you'll enjoy it so much better.

I voted, "in the order the story happens," but how does one figure that out gorcorps? 😕😱

Sorry, forgot to mention that part has already been figured out in the wiki page I now put in the OP

QFT. However, one guy told me Clancy's later books are better. He says "there's character development" in them.

Haha, I guess you don't like Heinlein either?

Without Remorse is indeed the best one, though Jack Ryan is only in it on one page IIRC. It's mostly about John Kelly/Clark.

For the most part it doesn't matter if you do story order or publication order, but don't bother with Red Rabbit.
