i just told my interviewer 70% dev/30% support since the position was for a software engineering... but when i look back now i felt like i shoulda said 50/50

Willing to devote? As much as the company needs.

But in the long term it would be a waste of my skills and experience to spend more than a small part of my time assisting with support instead of doing development work.

If you are looking for someone to spend a majority of their time on support, perhaps you could save yourselves some money and hire a junior developer just out of college.

you are good

I agree with Dave. I think this kind of question is to see how desperate you are and for them to figure out if they can put you in a lower salary range and have you do more support or if you won't fly for that and belong at a higher salary range. That is just a gut thing though -- it may be different at the company you are interviewing with. In any case, I think your answer was good because it showed flexibility but it didn't sound blatantly desperate as 50/50 would have been. Good luck.
