How should I go about setting this up?

Hey everyone, I'm new to RAID so I had a few questions. Basically, here are the hard drives I have now, sitting on my desk:

(2) Western Digital SATA 74GB Raptors

(1) Seagate IDE 160GB

(1) Seagate IDE 400GB

My idea was to RAID the two Raptors, in whatever way is the fastest. From what I read, they are very reliable hard drives so hopefully a crash won't happen. Then, I will put all my documents and personal settings on the 400GB drive, by changing the location of My Documents.

Finally, I'll have the 160GB drive perform full weekly backups on my main drives, along with selected files from the My Documents drive.

What do you think? Good idea, bad idea? Can you recommend some backup software that works really well?

Depends on your motherboard. Most offer setting up a RAID 0 array which would be the fastest option for OS and game loading. If not you'll need to get a 2 port SATA controller card.

As far as backing up to HD, it is not a backup in book, especially if its in the same system. Yeah I do it too, but I would have the weekly backups done on a set of DVDs. Maybe a double set once a month that you would keep somewhere else.

I dont use any at home currently. I just redo the whole directory I archive on DVD-R. If it gets much bigger I'll have to looking into something.
