Well just got my new A7V and after popped it in there at default voltage i got to 750@900 with stock cooling. So i switched to my Globalwin and while removing it to reapply the thermal grease i broke the middle tab on the socket!! So now i cant put my Globalwin. So I was wondering is there anyway i can fix it? I tried superglue but it just broke when i put the HS on. Is there anything else i can do? Right now I have my coolermaster on and the temp is at anyway 49C!!! ANy help would be appreciated.

The side has 3 tabs, and the one i broke is the middle one. The Globalwin uses a clip which uses the middle tab only

so should i go buy some Epoxy and just glue it together?

thanks

Not likely it will hold, those clips put alot of constant pressure on those tabs.
First thing to consider is to just RMA it and get a new one..possible?
Otherwise how good are you with fabbing a new clip?

Hmm. The CoolerMaster heatsink a friend got had a clip that used all 3.. Perhaps this would fit on the GlobalWin, if you could find where to get one?

CRV, he was probably referring to epoxying the CPU to the heatsink. Thermal epoxy holds perfectly well. It's nowhere near as heat conductive as arctic silver or anything like that, but it does hold tight, pretty much permanently.

Trying to glue the tab itself back on is not a good idea. That's too small a part to work with and epoxy won't hold it tight. Other people have gone so far as to create a new tab out of metal and epoxy that to the rest of the socket; they make it large so there's a larger contact area to hold tight. For me it was easier to just epoxy the heatsink to the CPU. Done that twice, as I've broken two sockets in the exact same way (using two different GlobalWin FKP32's; they need to come up with a better clip).

RMA'ing the motherboard would be nice, if you could get the company to do it.

Ah I see what he meant now... never tried the thermal epoxy idea..it's not quite as good as compound you said, but a could be a lifesaver if you bust a tab.

A have heard of a few use zip ties to hold it on tight, crude but if you can attach them somehow and get it secure..could be effective.

As we all said..RMA is the first course of action.

thanks for hte ideas guys

the HS im using now is a coolermaster, and it uses all 3 tabs luckily
crv, lordevermore
not really sure thats a good idea, once i do that its on there permanently. What if I want to put another HS on there, or ever resell it. NOt many people are going to want ta chip with a HS attached. Also, since this is my only computer as of now if I rma its goin to be quite awhile, and I dont know if i can survive. 🙂

SO i think imm going to get crude. Get some kind of strong yarn of maybe even fishing wire and just tie it up. You know what they say, the simplest ideas are sometimes the best.

thanks again guys

Kudos to Coolermaster. AFAIK all socket 462s have the 3 tabs but so far few HSF makers have used them. Good to know that at least one company has the right design.
