I have never cooked fish before..

Bought some today for a change of pace.

Can anyone suggest a good method of flavoring and cooking?

You can clean it then deep fry the whole thing.

You can fillet it and bake it.

You can cube it and make a stew with veggies.

Your options are limitless.

I take my tilapia filets and put them on a baking tray, brush on some Thai Ginger sauce and bake them at 425F. About every 5 min. or so I'll flip them and brush on a bit more sauce. After about 15 min. they're done ;) Maybe a bit longer...but not too much or you end up with fish jerky.

If it was a fresh one, and they've cleaned it for you ... steam is the best!! Steam the first for only 3-4mins., remove the water that comes out. Heat up a pan with some oil, slide the fish in there, light soy sauce+sugar ... you'll be done in 15mins. =)

DEEEEEEP FRIED, until the bones are crispy, served with sweet and sour sause (viet). Or, you could ask the place that you bought the fish from to fry it for you, most places would have free fry services.

Eww. Here in Hawaii those are considered rubbish fish. Gross. :(

Oh yah, I forgot the "how to cook it" part of my reply.

1 - Put in rubbish can.

2 - Go to Jack In The Box

3 - Unwrap food and enjoy! :)
