How Should I Connect My PC's for Migration?

i'll probably get some migration software to help (could use some advice there), but my question is what is the fastest way to move files from old to new pc? i have external hd's i can use, but can it seems i should be able to connect the pc's directly either via usb or the nic...if so what sort of cables do i need? thanks...

I typically find it faster to just remove the old drive out of the old rig, slave it in the new one, copy the files over, and then put it back when I'm done.

both machines are xp (old one is 3 year old compaq p4), new one has xp media center and is a core 2 duo. both have the integrated 10/100 nic cards that came with them. sorry for being dense, but in this setup do i need a crossover cable or will my leftover cat5e cables work in this configuration? is the xp setup wizard pretty easy to figure out?

i'm not comfortable messing with the hd itself, prefer to migrate across pc's.

thx...
