i just put together a new computer and want to use the old one as a sort of server. my asus has 2 lan ports and i was thinking of connecting the second one through the first as a server. can i use the first as a firewall, will it catch everything so that i don't have to have systemworks on my gaming rig, just my server? or should i just put both on a router? this is my first time to ever have 2 computers

Yes, provided you use a Real Server OS and Server Firewall.

If you use Windows XP (2k, or Win98) regardless of the sharing method each computer has to have its own Firewall/AntiVirus/AntiSpyware, software.

Yes. I setup a server with 2 nics. 1 going to your ISP, the other on your local network. I used Zonealarm for the firewall. Depending on the OS you use. You can run NAT (Network Address Translation) or ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). I would get a small 4 port hub/switch, they are cheap at Newegg. That way you do not have to use a crossover cable. If you hook 2 pc's directly together, you must use a crossover cable. If put a hub/switch between the 2, you can use a standard ethernet cable.

Something else to think about is a firewall/ics/server all in one ... check out www.smoothwall.org

Hope this helps, pm me if you more in depth info.
