So just a moment ago my mom said she went to the apple store to check out the new ipad and she said she wants to get it. If she gets the new ipad then it would be Beneficial yl me too since I could use it too. But the down sside is that she would have to spend half a K and in this eeconomy it would be better to save then spend.

If she wants a tablet, then the iPad is a good choice if she isn't very technically aware. It's the tablet I recommend to most people, it is pricey - but at least they have good resale.

If you don't want her to buy it, I would make an argument against the idea of tablets in general. I have personally owned a few of them, and have sold each after about a month, as I much prefer my 13" MBP. You can be way more productive on a laptop, though obviously it is a different form factor than the tablet.

Well, tell her it's better to save than spend.

But personally, I'd tell her the following:

1) It takes at least 6 hours for a full charge on that thing even with the supplied charger, and it won't even charge sometimes when you try to use it while it's plugged in. In other words, the thing is a battery hog. She still gets 10 hours of continuous use out of it though.

2) It's generally not too useful if your house is full of Windows computers.

3) It'll cost her more money to buy cases and accessories for it, and trust me, she will be tempted to, so it's not just half a K. It'll be more like three quarter K by the time she's done with it. She's gonna have to layer about $50 - $100 worth of app money on top as well, over time.

4) It doesn't generally offer her a better computing experience than a laptop, even though it may seem to be a more convenient device to use.

5) She will find it hard to look at other screens after exposing herself to the new iPad's screen over an extended period of time. That's a sincere warning.

6) In the case that she decides it's wasting too much of her time (and trust me, it can be addicting), she's out at least half a grand for a paperweight.

7) In the case she is truly addicted to it, it'll take up the majority of her time, and she'll have less time to do other things.

8) If you can't stop her even at this point, imply she has 14 days to return it.

9) If she ends up enjoying it, God helps you, your mission has failed.

Can your mom afford it?

If your mom wants to buy it should be her decision, unless of course there is some reason why it shouldn't be her decision, but then that wouldn't be a discussion for a tech forum.

Do you dislike apple? Or is it just the cost. Granted it is expensive, but not more so than other tablets worth

If she can afford it then what's the problem? Thinking you shouldn't spend 'in this economy' is part of the problem with 'this economy'.

The economy right now is much better than it was a few years ago. Definitely not in the deep recession we once were.

If she has the money, let her buy an iPad or any tablet. If she doesn't have the money then voice your concerns or other alternatives. At the end of the day though, its her decision.

Give you Mom advice if she asks for it. It's her money. She knows what to do with it. You shouldn't be going around telling your mom what to do. If you want to boss people around, have some kids.

No problem in giving your opinion to your mom. Too many unknowns - relative ages - economic status, etc. I can tell you honestly that today there is no reward for saving. The Fed's policies discourage it and encourage spending. I know of several senior ladies whose iPads have opened a major doorway for social communication.

Ok I discussed it with my mom some more and she really want it.. After researching more on the internet it does seem pretty cool.

Well I am a student and I need to conduct mass amount of research either for research papers, presentation or just overall.. projects.

Would an Ipad be ideal for me?

No. You need a computer.

And this is coming from a guy who has used all three generations of the iPad.

Actually, at the Milford Academy, we teach that children should be neither seen nor heard.
