I just bought an asusp4p800-e deluxe and a sata hd to update my system. if i use the sata hd, where do i plug the cd rom drives primary or secondary ide controller? Actually i have 2 optical drives, can 1 be on the primary and the other on the secomdary?

and i keep hearing about sata drivers, what's that about? i didn't get any. I'm assuming some magical bios setting (i haven't got that far) will make the sata boot, right?

I have the same mobo as you, with an 80ghz Seagate SATA drive. Simply plug your SATA HD into the SATA 1 on the mobo. Leave the BIOS settings as they came from the factory. DO NOT install the Raid drivers from the mobo CD. These are not required with this mobo as long as you connect to SATA 1 or 2 (ICH5 chip). Also, if you are going to use a second HD, IDE, don't connect it until after you install Windows. I have a second HD on a Promise controller card, and my DVD-ROM is connected to the primary as master, and my CD-RW is connected to the secondary as master. Everything runs great. I really like the motherboard.

Hi,
I'm up and running now, thanks
I didn't install the raid drivers like you said, but device manager has a problem with that (an explanation mark)
also when i boot,I see a fasttrack message bios not installed! what's that about

i"m sorry I wasn't clear.

I don't get so much an error as a mesage during boot the no fastrack device was found. bios not installed!
i went into bios and changed from raid (default) to ide
now it just says bios not installed. I don't know what that means.

Device manger is ! other devices ? raid controller!
i guess it wouldn't hurt to install the drivers, right?

Go back into the BIOS and set everything to default and try again. The factory settings should be right for SATA. I'd recommend not installing the Raid drivers; I've seen a couple of posts, I think on the Asus forum, that said installing the drivers when using SATA only will cause problems. If you still have problems, post back, and I'll give you my BIOS settings.

Just thought of something I missed a few minutes ago. Go into BIOS and disable the Promise (Raid) controller. That will get rid of the FastTrack error.
