It is strongly recommended that you close all Windows Programs before running this Setup Program.

I sometimes do close just about everything, often don't. Don't remember running into problems except occasionally I get a message that this or that should be closed before proceeding with the installation. Of course it's a PITA to close everything and reopen it. My biggest objection is closing my Firefox. It takes a while for all my windows and tabs to reload.

What is your thinking and experience?

I only do it if the installation is likely to share resources with a open app. A/V, Spyware apps... Things like that.

I just installed MediaJoin 3.0, a freebie and had closed all obviously open applications (didn't get into the dozens of background stuff running that I'd have to use Processes or Enditall to close), but left FireFox open (lots of windows/tabs), and as the program was installing itself with default settings my computer completely locked up requiring a reset. The subsequent install appears to have installed without problems after the reboot. I guess it's prudent to at the very least save all your data!
