I just got a call from my parents and my dad is going to have emergency surgery to have his gallbladder removed because it is infected. How serious is this operation? How worried should I be?

Very common procedure. Very high success rate.

Don't be worried at all. It is almost as common as tonsils getting taken out.

Don't worry , he'll be just fine. If we were sitting here talking about this 10 years ago it would be a little different. Today it is an outpatient surgery. Normally it's 2-3 very small incisions. They take it out , and you go home later in the day. Just do what you can to help him be comfortable afterwards. Although in most cases people return to work the very next day as well.

g/f had it done a couple years ago. Not too bad, she was banged up for a couple days but overall nothing crazy.

Ironically, I don't think they really take tonsils out that much anymore. I had tonsillitis 2-3 years in a row when I was a teenager and they told me to suck it up and deal with it. Whatever vein or artery or whatever is right behind one of your tonsils I think they're afraid of accidentally cutting. Or so I heard.

My wife had hers removed a couple of years ago.

Was not a big deal. (Well it was to her... but looking back on it... not a biggie)

She missed more work before the surgery due to being sick, than she did afterwards.

But yet they'll do open heart surgery? I think someone lied to you ;)

My wife had hers removed about 6 months ago. She did well with no serious complications. It does have an impact on how you digest your food, but nothing that would cause pain. It will take him at least a few days before he feels like getting up and moving around, but as long as he sticks to his pain pill schedule he should be good. :)

My dad recently had his out in outpatient care. He didn't have to spend the night, and there were no complications.

To be the doom sayer. People die from this procedure. Sure the percentages are very low. ;)

No worries man, my grandmother had hers taken out when she was in her 60's.
