How secure is wifi guest network?

I have several Win7 pcs and they all require passwords to log in and pwds to access other shared directories and networks. When I set up the sharing in the past, it was for specific USERS (basically me, spouse, child with less access and rights). Currently I'm using a old wireless router that do not have the wifi guest network feature. Would upgrading to a router with the wifi guest network feature be worthwhile when I have guests that visit? Or is my network setup secure enough w/o the feature?

They are only as secure as you set them up to be. If the AP is the router etc then it can be pretty secure.

Generally, I think, "Guest" wireless networks (Guest SSID), allow access for guests only to the internet-at-large (the network connected to the WAN port on the router), and not to your local LAN. "AP isolation" is another way to achieve this with other routers.

Wireless Routers with separate Guest SSID are not expensive any more.

To avoid unpleasant mishaps you are better off with a Wireless that includes Guest SSID.

Not to mention that Tomato (not sure of DD-WRT) is adding it (nearly debugged) at this time (Search for Shibby's mod and Teaman's (Toastman's) mod).
