How secure are the astronauts while doing their space walk?

I'm guessing there are several checks in place to make sure that they do not detatch and float away?

What would happen if the astronauts were accidentally cut loose?

If they were accidentally cut loose, they would float away into space.

They have a miniature black hole machine in case they get cut loose, they just need to turn it on and they will get sucked back to the mothership.

Well what do you think would happen? They would float away into space! 😛

Probably some kind of rescue attempt would be made. If they simply got detached while stationary they would be floating away quite slowly. If they were moving when they got detached, well they would probably float away a little faster and be irretrievable.

Either they would run out of oxygen and asphyxiate or their suit would run out of power and they would freeze to death.

I have yet to see one get assaulted so... pretty secure I would imagine.

Come to think of it that would be insanely scary. I'd be very nervous the first time, but just like anything else in the world (or space for that matter) you get used to it. I'm sure the guys that have been up there for a while are careful but probably aren't too nervous doing it.

probably no more nervewracking than riding a couple of giant roman candles into outer space
