How screwed am I?

The other night I figured I would throw come fresh thermal paste on my processor which was running a bit warm. The CPU had stuck to my heatsink and upon my trying to put it back in having seperate it I bent two pins fairly badly. I am still covered under neweggs exteneded warranty. I am sure though it does not cover physical damage. I got a RMA from them, should I even bother sending it to them. BTW, I have fixed bent pins before, these are bend beyond repair. :frown: Is there anything I can do?

If you bought a car, and two weeks later you drive it into a wall while daydreaming, would you take it back to the dealer and expect them to replace it for you?

The pins themselves bent. Like elbow macaroni, but much more expansive. Not easy to fix without risking seriously messing things up. (Pin twisting off)

They are... my stock P4 didnt fit too well on the socket, and thus it got bent, i fixed it put sliding credit cards through so that the pins line up, its really hard to bend them and they bend very easily.

Just bend them back. If you are careful, there is nothing to it. Take two credit cards and slide them in the row on either side of the bent pin and use them to manipulate it back into shape, very carefully. They will bend back very easily so you do not have to apply much pressure at all.

Just get a little torch and heat the pins up. That way they won't snap off.
Pff, that's dumb. Everyone knows torches are for AMD procs. Use the microwave for Intel CPUs.

Use a paperclip to hook the pins and get them close to straight. The credit card trick will take care of lining them up properly.

I haven't messed with a p4 but p3's and earlier all responded well to this treatment. The paperclip can be bent into a hook small enough to get your pins.

Newegg is cool enough, they may just replace it, but it's pretty messed up to take advantage that way.

There is a guy out there who repairs bent pins by actuially replacing them for $15 for the first pin + $5 for each additional one. Search around google. Another option is cut a paper clip to the proper length, and stick it in the socket.
