How safe are my 3 computers on my network? (Soon 4)

I have cable at home, got a netgear router. (Thx CrapUSA)

Now, the 192.* IP addresses the router assigns are not routable over the internet, correct? (Private)

Chance of a hacker getting in? Slim/likely/none?

The 192.168 addresses that it assigns are non-routable. 192.* includes a hell of a lot of routable IPs.

As for security, they are protected by NAT. Not the best solution in the world, but it should be fine. Just don't do anything stupid like pass the ports for telnet to one of your machines & then set up a telnet server on it & leave it running.

it'll be safe. i don't think there are any router vulnerabilities currently so it'll be fine. outside machines can't access any one machine directy.

I would suggest:

A) Software firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro is the best, by far)
B) Hardware firewall
C) Linux box

C is the one that will be the best, then B, then A. C is also the one that is hardest to set up, then B, then A. Currently I'm running a hardware firewall, I hope to learn Linux enough in the next several months so I can run a linux box for IP Masq'ing and firewall'ing. I might run a 386 or 486 on one of the very (VERY) small distro's like Freesco.

I have the netgear rt311, which is like the 314 with only 1 port.
I also use Zonealarm, to at least be able to control which programs access the net and act as servers.. it's pretty good.

I recently went to vulneratbilities.org and did a system scan, and the results made me nervous, says I have a server on port 80????

You can have services disconnected, and the rest connected in such a way that it would be less risky.

I have probably the same router you have and as long as you don't have any default forwarded ports in Menu 15, you will be fine. Without have a default forwarded port, there is little chance anything can be done to any of your machines and to your router (providing you haven't changed the defaults to allow external people telnet into the router).
