How reliable is "cd to cd" burning compared to "image" burning???

I just got a Hi-Val 16x10x40 cdrw burner in one of those "turkey day " sales. It's the first burner I've owned .

Reading thru the instruction booklet it has a section that says I should make an image to my hard drive , preferably over directly copying a cd from my cdrom drive to the cdrw drive simultaneously. It says i should only make direct cd to cd copies only if I'm short on time, or have a cdrom drive that had good "error correcting".

So, since I'm new at this,...... how reliable is "cd to cd" burning?

Is there a pretty high failure rate, or is the manufacturer just trying to be cautious??

What is the success/failure rate of making direct "cd to cdrw" copies??

Thanks for the input.

I do them all the time, but however, doing a CD/CD copy can result in Buffer Underruns if both drives are on the same IDE channel (mine are). Most of the time, as long as nothing is running in the background, I can do a cd/cd copy anytime and it works flawlessly. However, I'll do image burning if it's vital data etc.. just so I know it's 100%. Nonetheless, it's really preference, if you have a fast enough computer, you can do cd/cd no problem (mines a P2 400 / 256MB RAM/ 8x CDRW / 32x CD).

So as I mentioned, it's really a matter of preference.

can be very reliable provided you have a reader which can provide data fast enough for the burner at a given burning speed.
it also helps if the burner has burnproof just in case! :)

The best way to know is give it a whirl and see what happens.. Don't be fooled by programs that say "CD to CD" as it may not necessarily be the case -- ie.. it's really CD to HD to CD and the HD is an option.. You'll probably also want to unload any memory resident programs and not use the PC during the burn, at least in your initial testing..

Very reliable, at least with a SCSI subsystem. I routinely make cd-to-cd copies between several drives in the background, with zero buffer underruns and without burn-proof engaging a single time. I've never been able to do this reliably with IDE, especially not while trying to do something else (like fragging away in SS or something :D)

I liked buring cd to cd in EZ-CD, but now that i have winxp and nero... nero doesnt do cd to cd, does it? When i tried it just ripped the cd to the harddrive then burned and took godawful long. Any other programs you all know of that do good cd to cd copying?

nero does CD to CD copy, when u choose the CD-copy thing just make sure "on the fly" box is checked...then it should cd to cd without burning an image on your hard drive first
