how reliable are VW tiptronic transmissions?

In about 100,000 miles I had one minor hiccup with my passat V6 with tiptronic.

Right at 50,000 miles if I put it in "drive" it wouldn't shift out of first gear. It would just hang there. But if I dropped it over to the "manual" mode and shifted it myself it would shift fine. It did that for a day and then never did it again.

Wduaqnug, you're my favorite member here.

My wife had two VW Passats, one '98 and one '03. The '98 was horribly unreliable, but the only problem it ever had with the transmission was because a mechanic screwed something up while they were replacing the engine.

The '03 had no problems at all for the 34,000 miles before it was crushed between a cargo van and a Dodge Ram.

The downshifts in my fiancee's old 1.8T Jetta with a tiptronic were a little interesting. A full throttle downshift felt like the transmission dropped out and a 2-1 shift when stopping provided a jerk. Overall I'm much happier with the DSG in her 2.0T.
