How reliable are the Nissan maximas?

Growing up my dad would only buy japanese cars, therefore, he would ONLY buy a toyota or mazda.
I've had a 626, 929, and a Camry. I am looking to buy my own car now, but since I know jacksh!t about
cars my dad will be going along with me. Obviously he wants some say in what I get, but I will have the
last say for sure.

Having said this, he dispies Nissans and Hondas. I am looking to spend at the most $9000. I dont want
a Toyota becuz we already have one. I love how the Millenia looks, but the fiance doesnt like them.
She wants hondas, but everywhere you go u see a honda. Audis are nice, but good luck finding the A4
for around that price with low miles. So, now I'm stuck with the Nissan Maxima. The new models (not
the new ones that look like the new altimas) look very nice, but I can't afford that. The old ones aren't
bad, and I would buy one since it fits in my price range.

In the philly area, I've seen them go for $7k-$9 depending on where you look. My dad says their tranny
tends to go pretty fast. Then again the man is very bias. He wants me to get a camry. I think they're
ugly. Anyways, I love the millenia

I'd say the newer Nissan Maxima's are more Japanese than Mazda's (Ford) are.

Go for the Nissan Maxima.

As with any used car, the life of the car depends on how the previous owner treated and maintained it.

They're all built the same, but cared for differently.

Pretty much any car you buy today will be fairly reliable if you take proper care of it, however some will take more beatings than others. I'm assuming you want one that you can play with a fair amount, and not have it break down. Something with a reasonable amount of HP and torque would be ideal, as you don't want to have to push it to its limit to have fun (ie, stock civic - have to rev the snot out of it to accelerate). Something lower-revving and torque-ier would be good, IMO.

If you just want to slap rims on it ... make sure you get rims that suit the car. ;)

I admit I'm asian, but I am no ricer. I've seen ppl drive around with nice cars and end up making them super ugly by
putting on ugly rims and spoilers 5 feet high!!! so damn ugly.

A maxima with rims on will not look nice. Well, the older models that is. The millennia looks nice with them.

I guess it all boils down to taste, which most people have very poorly of. :p

Anyway.. if you make your car all nasty and drive up here I'll have to slap you. :p

Any maxima 4th gen and up with a nice set of NON RACER rims will look good.

Checkout Cardomain.com's member pages for examples of nice sleek maximas, and tons more ugly ones.

Your Dad hates Nissan and you are looking at a Maxima?
Fiance doesn't like Mazda Millenia.
You don't want a Toyota.
Too many Hondas around.

How about a nice used Rolls Canardly?

My in-laws have had good luck with their Toyota Avalon. It's not a common machine, and it's really roomy. I don't know what else you want. Personally, I can't really tell one from another.

I love my mom's maxima...it's so bad...the engine is smooth as hell...
It has had a few oxygen sensor problems though...I think we've had to replace the oxygen sensor 4 or 5 times and it's only a 96....
Everythign else is fine though
