How reliable are SSDs?

What is the reliability of solid state drives?

I am going to build a new computer in the next few months and I was thinking about using a SSD for my operating system and primary applications/games. But have read that many SSD fail within a year or so and it is not uncommon to fail in 6 months.

Are they really that unreliable?

Nearly all failure reported are due to controller, firmware bugs and drivers, not with the flash. As with any new technology there are issues to iron out. All storage media can lose data and it's no excuse not to back up data, whether it's HDD or SSD.

NAND flash is limited by program/erase cycles (calculation puts that >10 years) Theoretically it is possible to recover data even when the drive used up all erase cycles, since read always works.

Thanks, I just hate the idea it would be likely walking on a glass floor to use one - could easily go out any day.
