How reliable are Ford Explorers (2000-2002)? My bro is thinking to get one, but my ignoorant family is opposed to any american car after owning one 89 ford station wagon many years ago.

They're supposed to be pretty good. If I was in the market for an SUV I'd look elsewhere tho only because the Explorer is the Civic of SUVs.

I drove 7 different 2002 Explorers when I was test driving... they were testing the brakes... they had about 30,000 miles on them, the transmissions slipped in half of them... rear end was junk in 2 of them... and the check engine light was on in over half of them. Granted they weren't REALLY well maintained... and were probably abused a little, but still... if you're gonna buy one, have it checked over by a professional mechanic if you don't get a warranty from the seller.

*EDIT* I also drove 4 different Expeditions with 45,000 miles on them, and they were in perfect condition.

my dad has a 2001 ford explorer. The check engine light used to come on a lot (as someone earlier who test drove them also stated). However we took it to the dealer, since it was still under warranty, and all is ok, there wasn't any problems with it. There was probably just a large batch that went out that had screwy "check engine" detectors.

Most of them were due to misfires they told us... and since they leased them for the testing, they weren't even going to spend a few bucks to do a tuneup and put new plugs and wires on them. Only maintenance they did was for safety issues.

*EDIT* Bit of info for ya'll... not tightening your gas cap until it clicks screws with the emissions controls, so it sets a code and the light comes on. So if your check engine light comes on, check your gas cap first =)
