How reliable are CO detectors?

Our CO detector keeps going off, but we aren't feeling any symptoms and there aren't any sources on right now. Our furnace isn't running, the stove was off and the water heater was off and in another closed area of the house.

Are false positives common?

Could be a false positive. To be safe call the fire deptartment and see if they will come and check things out. In some areas fire departments will bring their CO sniffer and check for free.

its just somewhat weird because it has never gone off before, so i am not sure if its just "shorting out" or what.

Is it going off for extended periods of time or just for short beeps? Ours beeps (loudly I might add) occasionally in the middle of the night, but I've never investigated why.

It went off at 4:30 until I unplugged it and plugged it back in, it then went off again at 7:10am.

It needs a new battery maybe?

It runs off of 120V AC.

What brand is the detector ? (First Alert ?) Most 120v detectors do have a 9v battery backup. I recommend NightHawk CO detectors.

Make sure it doesn't have a 9v battery backup. Ours does, and it still fvcking beeps like crazy in the middle of the night when the battery dies. POS
