I always owned Dell's ones, and they worked quite well. Now I need to save a bit. What about Acer? I checked one at Costco and it looks good, however I do not know how is it on long run.

Acer's building quality has definitely improved from years past.

Do you have a link to said laptop at Costco?

I had my Acer TravelMate (1.4 Centrino) for over 4-5 years, still works fine, although the battery is depleted, I use it as a bed laptop. It still works fine, since I am still typing this message through the laptop. I've spilled tea and water on this laptop and it never had to go in for repair, so definately their machine is pretty good, although I am going to be getting a new laptop soon (HP, but only because I get employee discount.)

Just get dell, for the price difference, it significant loss in reliability is not worth it.

I have an Acer Aspire 5601 with 2GB RAM. Bought it back in August 2005, so it's been running great for 3 years. Used to use it a lot in the first two years, but not as much now. Battery's great. I can get around 3 hours (watching movie/TV) on the battery.

I would say no to Dell, at least Acer support is in the US, have fun getting a Dell and getting rerouted to India every time you have a problem and spend 30 minutes trying to get them to get the right address to send replacement.

Acer support always came through for me and reliability is great. Dell is not worth their reputation (if there really is any).

Here is a link.
It looks solid, I also like direct access keys.

I checked out that link and it looks like a solid laptop with a good amount of features & ports. What kind of price did you find it for? I didn't see a price listed on the site.

Not sure how much the Acer costs, but Micro Center has a Compaq Presario CQ50-130US with slightly lower specs for $480.00 after rebates. The differences are the Compaq has 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, 802.11g wireless, and 10/100 wired LAN, compared to the Acer's 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Draft-N wireless, and Gigabit wired LAN.

Otherwise, they are identical CPU, chipset, screen size, and so on. In fact, if you look around, all the OEMs are carrying virtually identical notebooks with T3200 processor, Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics, 15.4" WXGA, 6-cell battery, blah blah blah. Only differences are more or less the stuff I mentioned above.

The reason these notebooks seem so similar is because they are all using the same Intel OEM notebook reference design. Ever since Intel rolled-out reference notebook board and barebone designs, OEMs are basically selling identical notebooks with slightly different options.
