How redirect in Linux

I would like to know how can I redirect the information from formating a partition in LInux? I know the basic command to format, but I don't know how to send the info to a log file.
mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hda
 
"command" > "path to log file"

"command" >> "path to log file, to append new results"
