How ram intensive is x264 encoding?

Title pretty much says at all. I'm throwing together a spare box to do dedicated video encoding and I'm wondering how much difference RAM makes. I know any video encoding is very CPU intensive, but how about RAM? My google fu has failed me in trying to find a substantive answer. Can anyone fill me in?

Encoding is about hard-core number crunching, not necessarily large blocks of data being called in and out. A faster processor and especially a processor with more cores will help more.

Let me be the 4th to say it and then some more: CPU horsepower and more cores is what helps you most. With that said, the RAM usage when encoding with x264 with my machine with 8GB RAM hovers around 1GB at most (the codecs RAM usage as shown in taskmanager).
