Here's the stock cooler specs mine never turned more than 3300rpm or so and was definitely quiet, and if you're not overclocking I doubt your's will ever spin much faster than that either since the A64 3000+ runs pretty cool. They are using Shin-Etsu G751 so no need to scrape it off since it's high quality T.I.M. and that way you protect your warranty too.

Definitly not true. It runs cool, but not that cool.

With My K8USA A64 board, and some nF2 boards for that matter, if you enable the CPU overheat protection in the bios the worst that will happen is it'll shut the system down if the CPU fan dies. Thanks to having on-die temp reading like Intel has thermal death is a thing of the past. I had a Soltek Golden Flame nF2 with on-die temp reading and overheat protection, I put a 1700+ A in it but purposely left the cooler off but the CPU fan plugged in to test the overheat protection feature, EDIT TO CLARIFY: I tried powering on, it turned off before the CPU&NB fans could do more than spin a little, subsequent attempts to power up resulted in no reaction. I mounted the cooler with some Ceramique' and viola' it ran as if nothing had happened.

eshtog,

I just put together an athlon 64 3000+ system and the retail HSF (at least to me) is extremely quiet. It's also one of the easiest HSFs I've ever installed.

I lurk mostly, but since I was on the receiving end of some help I'll try to watch out for more questions if you have any.
