How quickly do you guys move up in weight?

In other words, how long do you guys normally lift a certain amount of weight before you add 5-10 lbs? I'm talking about weights, not body weight.

Some one else recently said something that really rang true for me.

The most important weights in the weight room are the tiny little 2.5lbs plates. I try to move up at least 5lbs every week on my barbell exercises, which means those little suckers are getting a lot of use.

The way you stimulate your body to grow is to continuously stress it with heavier and heavier weight, and then allow it time to recover and adapt. I work each of my major muscle groups no more than once a week, so by the time I get back around to working them again, they have fully recovered and adapted to bear new heavier loads.

This is under ideal circumstances, of course. Sometimes I don't eat properly throughout the week or I don't get enough sleep the morning before my workout or something and it compromises my goals, but 5lbs a week is definitely doable.

I was going up 5lbs per week for a couple of weeks, then that got a bit tedious, so I moved it to every 2-3 weeks now.

Why would increasing your weight get tedious?

I stay on the same weight until I can hit whatever reps and sets scheme I'm working on and then move up 5kg or so :)

E.g. aim to hit 12reps x 3sets or 6reps x 5sets
I can do it with 85kg and then I stay at this for 3-4 sessions and then I move up to 90kg. Here I maybe only get the first set and fail the last 2reps of the 2nd set. This is now my training weight until I can bash out the desired reps and sets I'm working on.

 Tedious was *so* not the word I was looking for there.

I meant "heavy."

I move up everytime I complete and pass my reps and set goal. For some things it happens every week, others two weeks, it just depends what muscles are strong enough to move on and what need to be worked on and what your goals are.

I move up, or try to, when I can go 2 reps past the target number of reps I am currently maxing out on. I realize that might not make much sense.
