How picky with memory are EMACHINES?

She has an eMachines T2890 computer right now, and it only has 256mb of memory installed.
Combine that with the crappy Norton AV it comes with, plus half a dozen other apps her kids have installed AND then finally the onboard video that uses SHARED memory...

In a nutshell, this computer pages to the hard drive when it is sitting still doing nothing.

I was thinking of getting 2x 512mb sticks at newegg of the Wintec Ampo PC2700.

Do you think there will be any compatibility issues with this memory and the eMachine?
I don't want to purchase it and find out it won't boot. We kind of need it in a few days too, and they don't have any money.

Some emachines are picky, some aren't so picky.
Thing is, the PSUs in those tend to go out fast... if I was you I would replace the PSU with a good one before doing anything else.

Then get some kingston ram (ive never seen an emachines that doesnt like kingston) and live happily ever after.

The PSU is what popped into my head as well.
Really, I'd just like to donate the thing to charity and build her a new computer, but they literally don't have anything to spend right now.

I've used both Corsair and Kingston value on eMachines in the past and have had no problems.

For an immediate speed increase you could replace Norton with AVG or Antivir. Be sure to use the norton removal tool to completely remove Norton. Winxp with 256 mb can be made to run decently if you cut down on the startup items and keep the malware in check. That's hard to keep maintained with kids involved.

Your Wintec link gave a 404 error for me. I recently used this http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820145485 at $21 a stick for Crucial on 2 different old Dell systems. The Crucial runs on 2.5V and is PC2700. YMMV
