How out of touch are your parents?

The other day when I was talking to my parents I realized that they had never heard of Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, etc. None of the major pop stars. I'm not saying that their music is great or WORTH knowing, but come on, at least a normal person would have heard of them! My parents are so incredibly isolated from the rest of the world that it's mind boggling.

The last straw was when my mom didn't know what "The Matrix" was
Me: blah blah, "The Matrix"
My Mom: What's that, I never heard of it.
Me: You know that movie where this guy wearing a black trenchcoat is bending over backwards and bullets are whizzing by over him in slow motion? Does that ring a bell?
My mom: No

Absolutely incredible.
Is it normal for middle-aged people to be that out of touch with pop culture? Or are my parents just a weird case?

Hell dude my dad is 71! (I'm 29) You wanna talk about 'out of touch'...my dad thinks 'pop' music means elvis presley still.

Then again, I know many 20 something folks that haven't seen the matrix (although most would know it's a movie). Within 5-10 years you'll be 'out of touch' for knowing about the matrix while no one under 20 will have any clue what you're talking about.

Nope, your parents are not only completely normal, they sound like smart people. As you get older, you realize how utterly useless and frivolous pop culture is, and you begin to understand there are far more important priorities...or at least you "should". That is what becoming an adult is all about.

If you haven't realized that your parents are geniuses by the time you're 30, there's probably something wrong with you.

i wouldnt say they're out of touch, its just if it matters to them or not...why pay attention to a generation that just plain sucks?

My remaining parent has been in a coma for a couple of years - yeah, I'd say she's out of touch.

Usually when someone becomes an adult and has to take care of adult things like ungrateful children and paying bills and such. They don?t have time to keep up with what?s popular at that time. :D

My father wants to play CS, watch collateral damage and black hawk down.
Told me Mi2 sucked before i went to watch it...
Many more examples.
My mom has no idea what he's talking about half the time :p

Oh well, asian families are different i guess :) Guess he's young at heart.

Oh, my dad's 49 and i'm 23.

There's one bad thing about all this though... I'm probably the only guy around who gets nagged at while playing CS not for playing it,... but for sucking at it. :p

I was going to post this also, but thought that it might sound a bit crass. But seeing that you did it already, then I join you in the
"My Parents are already dead and haven't a clue" reply. ;)

LOL,I bet your parents could bring up a few things that are important to them and you'd have no clue wht the heeck they were talking about."Out of touch" like being "normal" is all relative to your peer group.
