It doesn't update the entire earth at once.

It's done in parts. You can see the difference with some areas, you'll see one part of town in Fall, and another in Summer.
 
At least 2½ years where I live. They did some "Eminent Domain" demolition and took out 71 houses in my neighborhood back then. And they still show up on google.
 
The pic of my old house is really old too. Shows a car in my backyard that we got rid of a few years ago.
 
They try to do major metropolitan areas every 18 months. 98% of the images are 7-8 years old, but because these are mostly of the wilderness its not that big of a deal. Generally if you can zoom in all the way, the image is under 18 months old.
