Most newer microwaves don't use switching power supplies. The only exception is the inverter series microwaves, but they're among the few high end models.

Our microwave is transformer based and it's still light enough to be carried by one person.

More mfrs are switching to switching power supplies! (pun not intended!)

The really cheap models will one day follow suit. I suppose they can still make them the old fashioned way...

OTOH, the mammoth transformer out of the old units will put out 2kV at 500 mA! You can make a really nice jacob's ladder with this! Of course, this isn't something to play with either! You only contact the secondaries when running once. :Q

Cheers!

Had a panasonic from 89, the door handle broke but it worked otherwise. Last I knew it was still working when I gave it to my ex-roomate in 2000 when I was moving out.
Had a goldstar that lasted about 4 years before it died in early 2000.
Bought a new panasonic inverter model after the Goldstar. Now that they fixed the door problems...the panasonic microwave has been great, so far.
