Death to all that necro old threads! If it's not on the front page, it's already to old.

Depends, some if not most should have been aborted before posting. Others should live forever.

There is no too old. With all the searching for other threads on the same subject and all the mods combining threads on the same subject and all the "repost" replies to threads the intention and desire of the forum is clear. Anandtech has been around long enough for pretty much every topic possible to have thread somewhere in its past. You should always find that thread and necro it rather than start an original thread about the same thing.

exactly this. yet i get warned about 5 year old bumps, when i think we should just be able to continue the discussion. there's no real time on an internet forum, duh.

Werd. I'm off to like, page 221 of OT and I'm going to pick a post at random and make some infuriatingly ignorant comment that will get the thread going again.

I think the general consensus is that if it's not on the first couple pages then don't bump it. But this forum moves pretty fast so stuff gets buried quick if it's not a hot topic.

But then if you post something similar, it gets locked as a repost. So it's hard to choose what the best course of action is.

Really it should be based on the date of the last post, so say, any thread where the last post was more than a year ago should be auto locked so it cannot be bumped. Would be super easy to do that too.

If the necro is relevant and has a purpose to it, then it is ok.

If it's just some retarded troll poster or a brand new "WWYBYWB" poster bumping for "lulz", then lock that shit up and ban the necro-er.

i got a serious warning from Admin on a forum one time for using a thread that was only like 10 days old or something. A few responded with some hatred about it too, they take necro threads very seriously. Though after i found out that its against their rules and listed any thread older than like 2 days or something was a bannable offense or whatever...some people are mental in weird ways. i don't recall what forum it was now.

Someone revived a 7 year old mystery thread, and I solved it. So how would that happen if we adopt some kind of rigid policy on thread-revival?

"I'm sorry ma'am, there's nothing I can do. The thread is too old."

"But my baby will die!"

"Sorry, my hands are tied."

IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT, BABY-KILLER?
