How old is 21?

I was just on another forum and saw a girl say, "even though I am 21 and grown enough to make me own decisions."

Now, I'm 21 and asserting that I'm old enough to make my own decisions would never even cross my mind. I completely take that for granted - of course I make and am responsible for my decisions. But then, I'm 2 years out of college and working already, so am I not the norm?

At 21, what are/were you doing? Were you on your own completely as an adult or were you still, in effect, a kid?

It really depends on the mindset. I'm guessing the girl's still in college, relatively dependent on her folks, so in her situation, she's still treated like (to a certain degree) a child.

Of course, I'm pulling all of this out of my ass, but who knows? Maybe she mis-typed and meant to say 12?

at 21, i was still in college -- well, for a few months at least. after i graduated, i was not immediately employed, so i still depended on my parents for some expenses (when the necessity arose) but i was living alone.

i still consider myself a kid (somewhat -- i'd say i'm more of an adult now, though), and i'm 24. but i'm married now and obviously am not dependent upon the folks. i just don't really want to grow up -- i want to be a toys r us kid forever. :p

She's probably lying. She's really 16.

I'd say i'm just about an adult at 21 and a half. Probably more intelligent then a lot of older people, but am still childish to choose the wrong just because its what I want.

Of course, I've been living on my own since i moved away from home at 18 for college and pay my own bills.

I'm 21. I have one year of college left and I've been a police officer for about a year already...still lean on the folks for finances, though.

When I was 21 I was finishing my last year of college, but I was living on my own in an apartment.

21 is definitely old enough to make your own decisions.

I was on my own 3 days after high school graduation at 17. Wanted to be before that. Nothing wrong with my life at the time. I just had a desire to be out on my own.

I thought you just turned 15 or 16?

Did you not post a thread saying you just turned one or the other like two weeks ago?

He's in college at UC Davis. I've met him. In fact, I sporked his apartment about 3 years ago. :)

In America, people have the 'freedom' to make their own decisions at 18/21. I don't necessarily think that I myself or anyone else my age has the cognitive or emotional maturity to really make these decisions but what can you do?

I don't understand how you are two years out of college tho? Did you go to college early?

I'm 20 and still dependent on my parents somewhat but I'm trying my best to change that. I'm going apartment hunting tomorrow, I have a job (although it's not a high paying one by any means), and I'm trying my pest to get out on my own. I'm very immature though, but I still definitely make my own decisions (a lot of them bad :p). I have since I was 18. If your mom and pop are still making your decisions for you by the time you are 21 then something is wrong.

i agree hotchic, but you have to remember how many 30 year olds live in their parents basement and don't have a job

i joined the navy 5 days after my 20th birthday, so when i turned 21 i was stationed in orlando FL attending a navy school

of course you're not "the norm".. a normal 21yo is not 2 years out of college.

but beyond that I'm not sure I'm qualified to discuss normal. I was fixin' to, when I realized what's normal to me might.. not be.

most people don't grow up until late 20's. i've considered myself responsible enough to control my life since i've been 14 or so

Homeschooled, started community college at 15, transferred to university as a junior immediately after turning 18, spent my 18th and 19th year at college, graduated about 4 months before turning 20.
