How old do you have to be to get a credit card?

Either:

- Have a credit card that is an extension of your parent's account

or

- Have your own credit card

I would think that it is probably 13 for the former and 18 for the latter . . . but are there any exceptions?

I've got a debit card with my checking account, it works as VISA.

Do that, it's nice. Takes the money right from checking.

You typically don't want to use a debit card too heavily for online shopping, although it works just like a credit card. If someone steals a credit card number, they'll be stealing money from a huge corporation. If someone steals a debit card number, they're stealing money straight from your account. Many debit cards do have fraud protection, but you might be sitting around penniless for a long time while your bank goes through the red tape of verifying fraud and getting you your money back.

You don't even have to be human to get a credit card...hell you don't even have to be alive. There are plenty of stories about dogs and cats getting credit cards. And while I was in the navy we received a credit card offer for the command...not like a corporate or government card, but a pesonal credit card for someone named COMNAVSURFLANT. Funniest thing I'd ever seen at the time.

well, i do have some money stashed away in another account in another bank, so i wouldn't be very penniless . . .

if a hacker got my debit card number, would he/she (hey, its a modern world) be able to get into my savings account?

setup a checking account at Washington Mutual, or any other place with no minimum deposit and free checking with Visa check card with however much you feel necessary, probably around $500, and use it.

i do, i have a wells fargo checking and savings account that i opened with about $700 . . .

i keep usually $50 in the checking account and the rest in savings . . .

then if i need to buy something, i just transfer the money on wellfargo.com

even though it is visa and you use it like a credit card, be aware it does NOT build credit.

also, fraud protection on it is very minimal. bascially, you are SOL if anything happens.

Yup, I still buy the same things I would if I was paying in cash. With a credit card, I get many advantages. I don't have to carry around as much cash, if it gets stolen I'm protected, if I lose it money isn't lost, etc.

"Hello Mr. SURFLANT, I'm Jen from Discover. I'm calling to verify that an order recently placed on your credit card for two Aegis cruisers is not an attempt at fraud..."

NO IT WORKS FVCKING HORRIBLE FOR ONLINE SHOPPING. You can get a credit card as young as 16 in my case. I got a good one when i was 18. I'm having trouble with the whole fvcking debit card theory. Someone can steal every penny you have for at least 3+weeks (happened to me about 3 times) and you don't get it back for a while. Get yourself a good CC, and pay your bill on time, and you get all sorts of rewards, protection, benifits, for free!

another thing: I only have 5.9 APR, they awarded it to me for spending too much money. I had 27.9 apr with the visa linked to my wellsfargo. I dunno how to check credit, but i imagine i have at least a minimal good rating.
