How often do you think one should upgrade their home PC.
Not just pieces, I mean the whole thing.

If it works and does what they NEED it to do, should they still upgrade?
I know its pointless to try to keep up with technology, but how "up-to-date" should one try to be?

12-24. I figure by then you can still get some good hardware and the prices have gone down. Needing to upgrade a PC depends on the software, the person, and the industry. If one is so far behind industry standard that it cannot communicate with other machines or is nonfunctional then yes, needing to upgrade is applicable.

i do minor upgrades once every three months

as for the big stuff, 9-12 months
