my quantum atlas V 18G recently just crap out on me. i used it for 2 years and in my regular computer, not on a server. it started to give me some signs of death beforehand, like bad registry and stuff like that. i ignored them and thought scan disk will fix it. now it won't boot and can't be reformated. luckily they are sending me a replacement, good service. this is the second time it happen to me, last time was a atlas IV 18G. anyone have this problem?

Holy cow! I'm surprised that it still works. Does it see a lot of use or is it mostly a backup computer?

<< Hard drives, esp. Quantums, are very sensitive to high temperature. Did you route the cables off the drive and ensured the required space for airflow? I also know that ordinary 5400/7200 drives cannot reliably work 24/7, most of them will crap out in a few months of constant running. These not expensive drives aren't designed to run server tasks 24/7, IMVHO, you have to turn them off at least at night. >>

That's really odd... Maybe you had bad luck or something. My system which has a "cheapass" 20GB Quantum EIDE 7200rpm hard drive is on 24/7 and it's in use very much, and it is 2 years, never a single problem. I have some 400MB 3600rpm Seagate and Quantum drives that have never had a problem and they were also heavily used.
