how often to replace a fuel filter?

How often would you replace your fuel filter? my owners manual says "to replace it when clogged" my buddy went through several manuals that dont even mention it. I think its a pretty important and cheap thing to take care of every 15,000 miles or so.

Yeah, pretty much. It's so cheap, that you can't really replace it too often.

Although, something like 3,000 miles would be ridiculous.

As far as I can tell, mine is part of my fuel pump, which is in my tank. There's nothing in the manual about when it should be changed.
A ridiculous design to be sure.

Instead of that, it may be a little plastic filter housing clipped to the wall of the underbody at rear of car, fairly close to the fuel tank. If it was really inside the tank it couldn't be serviced.

I've had plenty of used cars that have gone 100K miles without having the fuel filter changed :0

I would do it at least at the 60k service if I owned a vehicle that long

Depends on the car. Some cars have the filter in the pump. Good luck changing that every 15k miles. My car has almost 80k and I haven't changed it yet. I probably will, along with the plugs and wires at 100k.

I bought my truck used with 112k, and just changed mine a few weeks at 163k. Looked like the original filter from the factory. Did not make any difference in how it runs either, not that it was having problems or anything, I just felt like it needed to be changed.

may depend on the size of the filter. at the store i've seen plenty much smaller than the one in my civic😛 i forget exactly but the replacement interval is quite long.

for my car..manufacturer does not have a recommendation. it is a real PITA to replace mine so i haven't replaced it at 200k. seems ok, but i really should do it sometime soon. I get dirty gas sometimes too.

I bet yours is screaming for a replacement.

Every car/truck is different. When I had my shop I would tell my customer it depends. My Saab has a HUGE fuel filter and Saab says every 100K.
I did it when I got the car but if I bougbht my Saab new I would do it every 60k. My old firebird and most GM cars/truck have a medium size one that I liked to replace at 30K. Dodge/Jeep/etc... put theirs in the fuel tank and said to service only when replacing the fuel pump. Some Asian cars/trucks have a meduim to small filter I would replace at 15K-30K.

When a fuel filter gets clogged it causes the fuel pump to wear more and can cause engine/running problems. It is not that hard to replace in most cars/trucks and usaully does not cost much. My Corvette has the pressure regulator built into the fuel pump so it cost a little more so I will do it at about 40-50k.

To find out if it's clogged you typically take it off and blow thru it. By that time it's just as easy to replace it. As you can see it really varies on the make and model. FWIW I change my 02 Lightning's FF every 10-12K mi. even though the book says 30K. A lot of it depends on the gas stations that you use. Stay away from the old ones since the tanks are probably full of crap.

I replaced it on my grand am around 30k miles, it was almost impossible to blow through it. My current car hit 17000, so im tryin to decide if it needs replacing or not.

I just had the filter replaced on my Impala a few days ago. They told me GM recommends it every 30,000 miles.

I pretty sure my Corolla still has the factory fuel filter still. I bought the car when it was 4 years old and I haven't replaced the thing. I picked up a new filter a couple years ago but haven't installed it yet. My car has about 200K miles.
I'm not sure what the recommended replacement interval is.
