it seems my old ricoh 2x2x6 cd-rw stopped working. it now burns fine but the finished burns never read right. it used to burn fine 🙁 i'm using win2k pro and nero 5.0.0.9 burned around 50 in 2 month and now its doing this 🙁 tried 2 times and still doing it. The very first time nero gave some weird hardware error at the end of the burn. Any idea? if theres no fix i guess i'll have to buy a new burner. though i really don't have the money to

Well you can try a few things:

1) Different CDR media (74min not 80).
2) Different software.
3) Do a burn at a lower speed.
4) Clean your drive (RTFM).

the thing that is weird is the burn finishes fine. Nero says burns succesful but my dvd and burner can't read it. i tried 2 different media, one 80 and one 74 min.

Watch out for the grammar police.

Correct: "How often do burners break?"
Correct: "How often does a burner break?"
Incorrect: "how often does burners break?"

How long have you had that drive? My el cheapo BTC 2x2x6x drive died on me in about a year. Don't expect many ide cdr's to last more than a year or two if you burn a lot. Looks like it's time to get a 12x burner 🙂

Check on any forums or online info. on old burner issues. A friend of mine found out that his Memorex 2x burner simply needed more greasing around the laser motor and rack. The laser burns the grease away from time to time. He found the info online on opening the drive up and apply some grease with cotton swab and the burner worked again.

Good luck.

Damn....it's about time for an upgrade, eh? 🙂

I remember paying $300 for that BTC 2x. Have you tried one of those cd cleaners on it?

Lemme guess... Ricoh MP2600A ??? Yeah, its DEAD! Thats what mine did when it died. But my was under warranty. The replacement doesn't get used hardly at all (1 disk in the past 6 months... its in my backup system, my main has a 12/4/32 SCSI)

Most of the time problems with CD burners are caused by a dirty lense. I would highly recommend you take your drive apart and clean it with a q-tip or something like it. That fixed my old Creative (JVC). BTW, cleaning discs usually don't do the job on CD-RW drives.
