How often does a professor stop a lecture in a 50 minute class

Wondering about it, because its the first time I've experienced it. During my MAT124 class, two people were talking to each other for a good portion of the class. So with 10 minutes left of the 50 minute class, he stopped his lecture and told them to leave, otherwise he would not continue his lecture. That being said, one person automatically left, and the other one yelled out that he was sorry for being disrespectful in class, then left...

After that was all over, a girl said "thank you" for kicking them out, and my professor gave a lecture about classroom etiquette of what is assumed when you first enter the classroom. He also talked about how spelling out what is etiquette when a person does not know changes the whole atmosphere, but it must be done... For example, if you answer your cell phone outside, you automatically leave the class and do not return. It is not etiquette to answer the phone in class, nor is it etiquette to have your phone on loud during a lecture.

My professor is known for calling students stupid before, but none of the statements from ratemyprofessor.com stated anything about kicking students out.

Opinions?
How often does this occur?

Why bother going and wasting everyone else's time and effort if you just want to talk? Casual talking with friends, sure whatever, life goes on, but if you're being disruptive the whole time, then STFU and grow up.

he doesn't let you back in if you answer your phone outside? How is that any different than a bathroom break etc

Seriously, unless you are a doctor, fireman, navy seal, or have some equally important position, why must you leave class to answer your phone? Are you THAT important you just can't call back later?

I wouldn't know, I slept through class :)

Uh.. I took a math class at a community college, and the professor never kicked anyone out.

I've been kicked out a couple of times - mostly in the easy classes where everyone is goofing around.

I once got kicked out for sleeping with my eyes open in a Digital Signal Processing class. He had gone on for quite some time on this topic I had no clue about; he finished, looked at me and asked me something like, "I know this is complicated stuff but did you understand?"

Apparently he asked me 5 times and I didn't respond - my eyes were fixed on the board. Then he walked up next to me and told me I could go sleep at home. He repeated himself again and then he yelled right in my ear! I snapped out of my trance, was utterly confused and walked out while everyone started laughing.

Like you know that is what the conversation would be about. And if you had previous knowledge that your mother was on her deathbed... you are even more of an a$$hole for going to class (to talk on your cell phone) rather then go be with your mom.

Cell phones are very very annoying. Nobody cares that you have a friend, nor do they care about your conversation.... unless they are equally shallow.

I am no fan of hardball professors, but you are in their house. They dictate the setting and rules of the class.

If you HAVE to answer every phone call even if it's just you calling yourself, texting is a not new. Just don't answer the phone and then text them back. Or go outside if it's someone you know isn't on a phone

I taught at a technical school for a while and I have asked students to leave if they couldn't shut up. It's not fair to the people who are trying to learn.

Especially when they are PAYING LOADS OF MONEY to be there.

It's no different than doing these things in a movie theater, except it's a lot more expensive. There isn't a single person there that is spending that sort of money just for a social hangout... and if there is, they need to be kicked out.

I had a guy once who would take one whole letter grade off your final grade every time your phone rang in class.

I've left class to answer a (vibrating) phone and I don't see anything wrong with it. Just like when nature calls, sometimes work calls or your babysitter calls or whatever and it can be quite important. Not everyone who goes to college is a teenager with no responsibilities in life.

And in response to the OP, I don't think I've ever seen anyone kicked out. Way back in High School yes, but its much more rare when people are directly paying for their education.

Never seen it happen in all the years I went to my community college. Maybe because they were night classes and mostly filled with older students.

Having to idiots talk in class is as annoying as two idiots talking in a movie theater.

I'm not a teenager but then again I don't have kids either. The class I am currently in, the professor's rule is - turn your cell phones off unless you have children or are expecting a call about an emergency(medical, someone in hospital).

No one's life depends on me getting back to someone at work for that hour and 15 minutes, so I just turn mine off.

Had a professor last semester that would stop class if you were talking, cell phone went off etc. He also didn't want you to have a laptop in class. But it was a linguistics class and was mostly lecture with little discussion, so it fit.

To be honest I've never been in a college class where anyone got kicked out, but in most of my classes nobody talks ever (even when the professor wants them to). I have seen people watching movies on their laptops, or playing games in class, but with headphones on it doesn't really disturb anyone (any the prof. can't see it anyways). As for cell phones that usually isn't a problem, but when it does happen most professors just give the student the evil eye as they walk out to answer the call. However I have had professors make the student let them answer the call and then b|tch at the caller. Also professors have taken the phone and then not really made any effort to give it back so the student has to try and track them down to get it back.

I found that most people that frequently talked during classes would usually dropout or have C/D average.

I've taught at the college level, and if I ever had someone talk loudly during my lecture, I'd be happy to kick them out. Thankfully, my students were good.
