If I were to wash off the summer\fall dirt, I'd be exposing the soft underbelly to Winter salt.

I strive to develop a 1-2" crust of protective covering, much like an elephant and mud.

I ran my car through an automatic car wash about 2 weeks ago...first time it'd been washed in probably about 1.5 years.

Isnt that what wax is for?

ideally once a week. but in reality once a month for me.

once a month or so, depending on the forecast. I'll probably wash both tomorrow or sat.

EDIT: And I am referring to a deep wash, including wax, polishing, claybarring, etc.

Washing is different from waxing. You can go to any automated car wash to get it washed, but waxing costs $20+ at some places or if you do it yourself it takes a bit of time.
2202 Pontiac Crap Am + paint falling off on the rear bumper doesn't deserve a wash... It just started falling off by itself one day most likely because the previous owners changed the bumper and used really cheap methods to repaint it.

I've lived in Texas for 11 months now and I haven't washed my car since I moved here. I don't buy into the showoff attitude lots of people have when it comes to their vehicles.
